Carving, Chasing, and Casting…

October 7-14:

This week I worked a lot in the studio, preparing for Midterms.

I spent Monday working on my chasing project. It was lots of hammering and detail work to get the surface to have more of a textured surface. I finished up the sandollar by putting a green patina in the cracks of the surface. I think it turned out well, and my critique went well!

I also finished my wax carving for my signet ring. I chose to make a model of my childhood art chair that also could function as a ring. I love to do wax carvings for casting. I then had to sprue up that piece for casting. I’m excited to see what it looks like after its cast!

On Friday, Sophia came in from Boston for a private viewing of a show she helped put together. Livia, Sophia, and I all went. Afterward, Sophia and I met up with Millie to watch the newest episode of The Great British Baking Show with some other friends. Friday was also my friend Dash’s birthday, and we threw a surprise party for him. We all hung out and chatted for a while before going out for the night. It was a lovely night, spending time with friends before locking in and working for the weekend.

Saturday, I worked on my 1oz silver pendant assignment. We had to go off of the pendant we made out of found objects. Most of my objects were domestic things such as facet handles, a small ceramic chair, scissors, a postcard, a ribbon, and a door handle. We then had to take 1oz of silver grain, alloy it, and roll it out into a sheet to fabricate a pendant, using the entire ounce. I didn’t want to use my silver, so I rolled out a super thin sheet, and constructed a basket to hold the rest of my silver as a necklace. I had a lot of fun with this project!

Millie and I went on a little walk to Wickenden St for a break from working. There also happened to be an artist market so we stopped by and looked at all the vendors. I picked up some flowers that reminded me of my Grandma on my way back to work a bit more in the studio.

This week is Midterms and I have a big review with all my professors on Wednesday. I’ve just been trying to finish everything up for that and making sure I’m prepared.

Hope you have a good week!

Love,

Sophia
