Midterms, New York, and Jacob

October 14-21:

This week was a busy one!

I spent Monday and Tuesday pretty much living in the studio, trying to get all my work finished up for Midterms. In Casting class, we learned how to centrifugal cast. I’ve done a little bit of casting at Interlochen, but I’m loving learning about the process more in-depth. Monday evening Millie helped me with some documentation for my earrings. I had a lot of fun with it!

Wednesday was the big review day! I finished printing out some images in the morning and then went on a walk along the canal to calm my nerves. Our reviews were with all of our professors, peers, and a guest critic. It was a long day, but lots of good things were said. My review went really well and got me excited about continuing to create! Afterwards, we had a little ‘Midterms are over’ celebration and just all hung out together, sang karaoke, and reflected on the day. It was lovely.

Thursday I sent in my Mail-In Ballot! I was very excited to vote! This election is such an important election and will greatly impact me and my future children, now all I can do is hope everything will work out.

Thursday we had a class field trip to The RISD Museum to look at some portraits. Our next assignment for Junior Jewelry Studio is to make a necklace for someone else. We were looking at portraiture with and without jewelry, specifically pearls, to imagine what their story was. I’m still doing some brainstorming on what exactly I want to do, but I’m thinking I would like to make a necklace for historical furniture. We also looked at some of the pearls that were donated for us to use from Tiffany & Co. I’ve never seen so many pearls in my life!

This week was also family weekend so Jacob came to visit for a long weekend. We drove down to New York for the day on Saturday and just walked around. It was Jacob’s first time to NYC so we took in the sights. We walked around Central Park, took the subway, and had a lovely Italian dinner at a restaurant called Uva. The city was so pretty at night, as we were driving back to Providence. It was a nice little day trip!

Sunday we got brunch with Millie at the cafeteria before I worked in the studio for a little bit on one of my wax rings for casting. I’m making a bunch of little chairs. This time I made a wrought iron chair. It’s a bit fragile, so I’m hoping it will cast nicely. Jacob and I then decided to do a fall colors drive along the coast. Ended up in Jamestown and stopped at some beaches along the way before ending at Beaver Tail Lighthouse. The weather was perfect and everything was so beautiful! It’s crazy how close I live to the ocean! We spent the rest of the evening making some soup and watching Love Island.

Monday morning grabbed some breakfast and coffee before I did a bit more work in the studio on my wax ring. I had to get it sprued up for casting. It took a while to figure out the best way to give it the best chance of working out. We spent the evening with Kaz, soaking up the sunlight and beautiful weather. It was such a nice weekend with Jacob. I’m really grateful he visited me and was able to experience irence my life over here in Providence!

Hope you have a good week!

Love, Sophia
