Earrings, New York, and Friends…

September 17-October 6:

It’s been a busy past couple weeks!

I’ve been having fun cooking and meal-prepping for the week. My go-to has been lemon roasted broccoli, mustard and honey carrots, sweet potatoes, and roasted cauliflower for lunches and chicken noodle soup for dinners.

In my 3D Modeling and Rendering class, I’ve been working on constructing my signet ring design. I’m making a ring-sized version of my childhood art chair. It’s definitely been a challenge trying to figure out Rhino, the program to make the 3D renderings. I’m not sure how much I’ll end up using this program in my practice, but it’s a good thing to learn.

In Chasing and Casting we are working on exact replicas of things from nature. We took a field trip to The Nature Lab to check out RISD’s collection and choose a piece to recreate. I chose a sand dollar. We are using Chasing and Repousse techniques to take a sheet of metal and hammer the item into the copper. This has been a four week project, with this past week being the last week. So I’ve been spending a lot of time finishing up that project.

I’ve also been working on a set of “ODD” Earrings for my Junior Jewelry Studio class. For this project we had to make three different earrings that could be paired together. My set was inspired by light fixtures. I really focused on pattern-making so I could cut a sheet of silver and fold the earring together in one piece. It was lots of trial and error, but I had a lot of fun working on it. On Wednesday those earrings were due and my critique went well!

This past weekend I took the train to New York to visit my friend Abby at Pratt. We visited the American Folk Art Museum and the exhibition there was incredible! I loved every piece and left feeling very inspired. The exhibition was showcasing Shaker Artists and a collection of original wooden board games. Afterwards, we went to The Morgan Library and saw some beautiful interior spaces. On Sunday evening we had a craft and movie night. We watched Hereditary and made paper cut pieces for each other.

Monday morning we grabbed some coffee and a pastry before making our way to Manhattan to go to The Met Cloisters. We usually visit The Met when we are in NYC together, but we decided to check out The Cloisters this time. It was so beautiful! We hiked up a bit to the top of a hill where the museum sat. There was a beautiful garden and lots of amazing stained glass windows and sculptures. After walking around for a few hours, we headed back to Brooklyn and rested up before our concert. We saw Remi Wolf at Kings Theater and it was an amazing show!

I had such a great weekend in New York and spent some really nice time with Abby!

Tuesday evening my friend Sophia, who goes to school at MIT came to visit for the evening. She was helping install a show for an artist right outside of Providence so she stayed the night at my place. We had a debate viewing party with Millie for the Vice Presidential Debate. I was required to watch it for my Election 2024 class. I’ve really been enjoying that class and learning so much! Wednesday morning Sophia and I grabbed breakfast together before she headed to the train station to go back to Boston.

It’s been a great couple of weeks working on new pieces and visiting friends!

Hope you have a good week!

Love, Sophia
